Combining visible and near-infrared images for realistic skin smoothing

چکیده
Skin tone images, portraits in particular, are of tremendous importance in digital photography, but a number of factors, such as pigmentation irregularities (e.g., moles, freckles), irritation, roughness, or wrinkles can reduce their appeal. Moreover, such “defects” are oftentimes enhanced by lighting conditions, e.g., when a flash is used. Starting with the observations that melanin and hemoglobin, the key components of skin colour, have little absorption in the near-infrared part of the spectrum, and that the depth of light penetration in the epidermis is proportional to the incident light’s wavelength, we propose that near-infrared images provide information that can be used to automatically smooth skin tones in a physically realistic manner. Specifically, we develop a framework that consists of capturing a pair of visible/near-infrared images and separating both of them into base and detail layers (akin to a low/high frequency decomposition) with the fast bilateral filter. We show that a smooth, realistic, output image can be obtained by fusing the base layer of the visible image with the near-infrared detail layer. This method not only outperforms equivalent decomposition in the wavelet domain, but the results also look more realistic than with a simple luminance transfer. Moreover, the proposed method delivers consistently good results across various

Enhancing the Visible with the Invisible: Exploiting Near- Infrared to Advance Computational Photography and Computer Vision
Silicon-based digital camera sensors exhibit significant sensitivity beyond the visible spectrum (400-700nm). They are able to capture wavelengths up to 1100 nm, i.e., they are sensitive to near-infrared (NIR) radiation. This additional information is conventionally treated as noise and is absorbed by a NIRblocking filter affixed to the sensor. We show that retaining instead of removing NIR inf...

Standard digital cameras are sensitive to radiation in the near-infrared domain, but this additional cue is in general discarded. In this paper, we consider the scene categorisation problem in the context of images where both standard visible RGB channels and near infrared information are available. Using efficient local patch-based Fisher Vector image representations, we show based on thorough...

The leaf chlorophyll content is one of the most important factors for the growth of winter wheat. Visual and near-infrared sensors are a quick and non-destructive testing technology for the estimation of crop leaf chlorophyll content. In this paper, a new approach is developed for leaf chlorophyll content estimation of winter wheat based on visible and near-infrared sensors. First, the sliding ...

In this paper, we propose a physics-based method to synthesize facial images in visible wavelengths from multi-band near infrared (NIR) images. The study on photometric properties of human skin shows that melanin and hemoglobin components are dominant factors that affect the skin appearance under different light spectrum. Specifically, a set of intensities observed at a certain surface point wi...
متن کاملTowards Practical Evaluation of Pedestrian Detectors
Despite recent significant advancement in the area of pedestrian detection in images, little effort has been devoted to algorithm evaluation for practical purposes. Typically, detectors are evaluated only on color images. It is not clear how the performance would be affected if other modalitites are used e.g. thermal or near infrared. Also, detectors are evaluated on cropped images that have th...
